dearest all...

for my final year dissertation essay, i am looking at forms of comfort. home comforts being the main focus.
i wondered if perhaps you could tell me...
1 what comforts you?
2 why does it comfort you and how?
3 do you use different comforting objects, things, words for different situations?
please could you paste some images also.
we could suppose consider this a tag. perhaps you could do a post for me and then leave me a note to tell me that you have taken part, so i can include you in my essay. or if you would prefer, you could email me.
this absolutely means the world to me if you could help me a little.
my home comfort is 'pig'. he has been to new york. florida. paris a few times. scotland. wales. france. and many more adventures. he goes everywhere with me. (apart from uni or to the shops.)
i don't think i could have coped very well here at uni without him. he keeps all my secrets. all my tears. and he snuggles me at night time.
he reminds me of home, so i suppose that is why he must be where i am.
thank you forever.

  1. i'm taking a minute off from writing a paper myself so i would of course like to help you out!

i've got to say that for sure books comfort me. stories that i've read at my home, curled up downstairs or underneath my blankets can always immediately make me feel comforted and that i can reach my home whenever i feel like it. i feel that books hold a certain memory within them, not just of the story being told but of the first or last time you've read the book and gotten lost in its pages. it comforts me because i am reminded that all i need to do is read the words of that story to be taken back to the warmth of my home.

i will do a little post later on with pictures and more words and things that are home comforts for me and i will comment to let you know its there for you :)

good luck with your essay doll <3

  2. My comfort is different smells. Certain smells that you can only get when you're in a particular place or with a particular person.
Like the fabric conditioner my boyfriends mum uses. My mum's perfume (YSL Paris). The smell of soot wafting through the tunnels and walkways on the London underground. Woodsmoke from the open fire we have in my dining room at home. At the earthy smell of my cat when he's sat on my lap, when he's been playing outside.

    Hope that helps.

  3. I think i'm an odd one, sitting on the bathroom floor comforts me. It calms me down whenever i'm ill/upset/scared/angry/unhappy. I don't think you want a picture of my bathroom floor though.

A home comfort for me is a card my friends made me for my birthday last year. It reminds me of better times, the start of new friendships, a good change, lots of laughter and lots of in jokes.

  6. People around me comfort me. Usually. And hot chocolate or tea. I also like my blanket. All of the books that I have at home comfort me, especially if I can curl up on the floor of my closet or on a chair and just read it, while eating chocolate. I like sitting in my backyard in the summer, swinging on the swings, singing and just thinking.

  9. What comforts me? Well a good roast dinner that my boyfriend has spent a good couple of hours preparing always does it for me. It speaks volumes... hes spent time making it & he loves me & has made sure that I know & when we have a roast it means we've got the evening together & will snuggle up. Maybe its my boyfriend that comforts me then...
    Good luck with your essay!

  10. best of luck on your essay! as for me, i find comfort in a variety of things. for stressful situations i'll seek comfort by sipping from a cup of my favorite tea - the warmth, fragrance, and taste have a way of calming and soothing away anything and everything. other forms of comfort for me are browsing through old family photographs and beloved childrens' books & stories. the memories they conjure are often the perfect remedy! last but not least, leaning on God, family, and friends for comfort is a great and powerful source of strength.

  11. 1 what comforts you?
Snuggling up by a big window with a comforter, good books, and a cup of tea comforts me. Also a bubble bath, candles, and music.

2 why does it comfort you and how?
All of the above are things that relax me, calm me down, or cheer me up. They enhance my mood.

3 do you use different comforting objects, things, words for different situations.

I have used all of the above for stressful times during school, times when I am worried about work or family, or when I am sad about a breakup. Definately multipurpose!

  12. I'd be more than happy to help!
    1 what comforts you?
Immersing myself in a good movie or TV show. I like the sweet ones, that make me feel happy even after it's finished. There are some favourites: Gilmore Girls, Amelie, Love Actually, Snow White, or I'd just watch some random foreign movie. Snuggling under a warm blanket in front of the TV is a very comforting feeling. Preferably with some hot chocolate and yummy snacks.
2 why does it comfort you and how?
I feel I can just escape from the real world for at least a couple of hours. I can let go of a lot of emotions (laugh, giggle, cry...), but at the same time forget about any of my own problems.
3 do you use different comforting objects, things, words for different situations?
Yes, well if I'm feeling more down than usual, I'd probably watch something that lasts longer (like a whole season of Gilmore Girls!) just so I can "escape" for a longer time. It also helps to have some extra chocolate.

    I hope I've helped!

  15. You're so sweet. It IS beautiful here. Summer is coming! (For us, anyway). But you are also very blessed because snow is so gorgeous. And I love the way my skin looks when I take photos of myself in snow, so perfect and pale.

My home comfort is a giant cardboard card my best friend made me when I was 14 and moved towns. It's massive. And it's full of photo's of us, and funny personal jokes and poems. It's like a hige two page scrapbook of our whole friendship.

  18. thanks for your comment! :) This is a great idea for a paper.

    1 what comforts you?
A lot of things - listening to music, taking a bath, watching a movie, yoga, drawing, writing, my pets, cooking.

2 why does it comfort you and how?
Things like taking a bath and doing yoga are really relaxing for me. Arts, like music or drawing, let me be creative and they allow me to release any negative feelings and explore my ideas.

3 do you use different comforting objects, things, words for different situations.
Definitely, I think a lot of what comforts me depends on the situation. Like sometimes, talking to someone else can help with something I'm going through and other times I'd rather spend time alone and do something for myself.

  20. I'm sick, so I'm too tired to take pictures and such, but I will tell you some things that comfort me;

I too have a soft toy-it's a brown dog filled with beads and has floppy ears and made from really soft fabric. He's called Mr. Teddy and I've had him for maybe 5-7 yrs and he comforts me especially when I sleep, I have trouble falling asleep without him under my arm! He's very cushiony too.

Other comforting things are-reading blogs like yours and books, eating really nice cake with tea, lying in my bed(especially in the day or in winter when i have big blankets and also when it's all rainy and thundery outside),being on the computer or watching tv with the lights off, watching romantic comedies,doodling/making collages and listening to music.
    :)

  22. This sounds like such an interesting approach to the intersection between home and comfort. I think from my perspective home comforts are the traces of my identity within my home - such as my books, little objects I collect and the images I have on display. I find those sorts of things a reassurance that I am in my own little space.

Good luck with your essay :)

  27. I have a rabbit version of Pig that is my ultimate comfort. I've had him since birth and he comes everywhere with me, if I'm going to be away for a night or more.
I had to spend 9 weeks in hospital a couple of years ago, and having him there stopped me getting as home sick as I should have done.

    Good luck doll x

  33. I would love to help with this!!

What comforts me are my clothes. Some things more than others, but when I add anything to my wardrobe it immediately becomes part of my collection, and part of my identity, I suppose. That is why it is always so hard for me to get rid of anything wearable-even old tablecloths or pieces of cloth that I use as scarves.

I suppose that my clothes are so comforting to be because I identify my self so much in and with what I wear. It's not so much about fashion necessarily- I think it's about the expression of self and my own personal art that I express so willingly through the way I dress. So my clothes become part of me, and part of my identity- so essentially they comfort me because they are my self expression, and being able to comfortably express myself is a comforting thing.

As for the third question I am not so sure. I do know that when I move around the world (namely when I moved to new york) it was very easy for me to create a home for myself, probably easy because I had my clothes and was able to properly express myself- therefore being able to be comfortable with my surroundings. Within smaller situations though there are certainly different things/words/phrases that I use to comfort myself and others. It really depends upon the situation though. A lot of the time I need to write- writing is a very comforting and soothing thing for me...

I hope that is a good enough reply lovely!

I'll look for some images for you and email them to you.

    I hope you're well darling!

  36. i know how hard it is with essay stuff so just wanted to give a hand, tho im new here and dont know if u r already done with it.

well i think my comforts differ according to situations & places. i lived in student dorms for 5 years. i think i needed it the most when i was in the netherlands for 15 months. i got really homesick in winter and i actually became an expert of rituals of comfort. i missed sunny days (im turkish) and food (not kebab, real food). esp when i was writing my thesis, i used to have some comfort food sessions. like feta cheese& fig jam breakfast, greek yoghurt, sourcherry juice etc. it tasted home. simple yet effective. oh, and i had a box of turkish delights and turkish coffee from home for emergencies :)

or we used to meet up with my peruvian friend to make a youtube session till morning, playing music videos and translating them to each other for hours. with wine or a jar of nutella. we used to enjoy each others languages, so it was quite fun. she also had 3 leprechaun dolls (i know, weird for a peruvian girl), with real healing skills, sitting on her sofa. she used to pick one and give me for a week.. if she was really down, i used to make her some coffee for fortune telling from her coffee cup (its a turkish thing), and tell her about the brighter days to come. optimism helps.

now im back home. im back to "tea& chocolate& writing" trio for comfort. or chatting with my boyfriend.

well i guess its a little too long for a comment but i couldnt find ur e-mail in ur profile. in case u want a pic, just e-mail me :)

    hope it helps :)
